News Letter

March 2003

The Secretarial Centre

2002/2003

Introduction

On behalf of our colleagues in the Secretarial Center, we the group of students who started to write, type, prepare and publish our News Letter, have in mind two main goals behind this work :

First:

To communicate with world community, through the Web Site,    where our N.L will   be   shown   soon   on   the www. Neccgaza.org

That will lead to better communication and understanding, especially in the current hard situation we live, our life is always harassed and harmed by Israeli hostile measures against our people; we are daily shelled, attacked and killed by Israeli military machines.

We want to assure the whole world that we are people of peace, we hate wars, we do not want more blood to be shed, let's live in peace and remember that death is something that can not be explained, but we are each owed a death, at which time it will come or where  is a mystery. Live each day as if it were your last, make amends with those you crossed or who crossed you, always be sure that you want to help those who are in need.

Our N.L is also an initiative step for peace lovers, humanity defenders and human rights promoters all over the world, including Israelis, to support values rooted in our heart, taught and fought for by  our three prophets through  our monotheistic  religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It is a cry for working together and a hand stretched for everybody who believes in humanity to work for achieving peace and better life for all without discrimination, for the Jew as well as for the Christian or the Moslem.

Second:

We, aim through our N.L at introducing our center (the Secretarial Center) and to let our colleagues  write and reflect themselves strongly and correctly in order  to prove that Palestinian women are not less efficient, educated and cultured than others, they deserve to live with dignity in their own independent state.

Secretarial Center, which was the first of its type to be established in the whole area of the Gaza Strip, was opened in 1964, when the need emerged for secretaries, within the United Nations Emergency Force operating in Gaza. The first group graduated then (about12-15) worked for UNEF. The center has graduated hundreds of qualified, skilled, and efficient secretaries who participated in developing Secretarial work in many fields of work they occupied. New methodologies, equipment, materials and subjects have always been introduced during the ever – updating process in the center.

Students who are mostly between 18-24 have the chance after having been accepted – according to certain criteria of acceptance including completing successfully Tawjihi (high school certificate), passing the entrance exam and proving the need and will  to learn and the commitment of following the process of education and training efficiently – to study for 11 months English language , office practice , book-keeping, Arabic correspondence, typing in both languages Arabic and English , computer applications. Many other cultural subjects are delivered to improve the students' knowledge and to raise their awareness.

Students  ( about 42-45 each year ) have the chance to train in the MECC main office during their study – period and after their graduation , they have also to train in local offices , companies , firms, NGOs …etc to gain more experience and to improve their practical skills .

Secretarial Center as many other centers, is run by the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), which started its work in 1952 with the aim of helping Palestinians, after their catastrophe (Alnakba) in 1948, to help themselves .Many projects are run by this humanitarian society in the area of the Gaza Strip and they cover several fields; health, education, rehabilitation and community development.

Finally, we wish for everybody in the world to live in peace and security, for ourselves we pray that bloodshed will stop, mutual understanding will avail and we hope strongly to live free, with dignity in our own democratic independent state like everybody else in the world.

 Conclusion:

It is just an attempt to write our NEWS LETTER; in fact it is the first to be prepared, so if there is any comments, suggestions, please do write to us. It  will enrich our mutual effort to reach together,  as a new generation to the point where we could raise voices loudly, denouncing all sorts of Human Rights' violations.

It doesn't matter where, when or by whom they were committed and meanwhile calling upon peace lovers to shout and not to keep silent, as silence might be interpreted as a sort of acceptance.

Unfortunately, while we're preparing this N.L, United States of America and The Great Britain invaded Iraq, the victim was and still Iraqi innocent children and women!!

The question is: what is the meaning of being Civilized, Progressive, and Human Rights promoter and Democratic in the 21st century?

We suggest a world wide workshop to re-define what seems to be old and out-dated sociopolitical terminologies. The killing, damaging, massive destruction and other similar definitions, might have replaced human rights, democracy, freedom, independence, according to American and British new concepts.

::: NECC IDENTITY

The Gaza Area Committee is part of the Department of Service to the Palestine Refugee (DSPR).  The DSPR is a department of the Middle East Council of Churches.  NECCCRW Gaza is an integral part of the Palestine Society and culture and operates with the support of the Churches, ecumenical and secular organizations.

NECCCRW continued to operate the two Family Health Care Centres serving the Shija'ia and Darraj/Tuffah areas in addition to the third one newly opened in Kherbet El Adas in Rafah.  These areas of Gaza and Rafah Cities are amongst the most over-crowded and under-served areas.  Preventive and curative services vary slightly between the three centres.

The mission of the Near East Council of Churches Committee for Refugee Work (NECCCRW) in the Gaza Area is aimed at the empowerment and strengthening of Palestinian individuals and communities to help them secure a better quality of life.  We seek the development of the whole human being by providing education, training and health services that enhance well-being, self-reliance and community participation in decision making and managing their affairs.

The courses have good reputation amongst employers giving the graduates better chances than others to find work due to the emphasis placed on quality and the good care being given to the trainees.
