Projects Promoting Community Development

Self-Help

Three projects were implemented at the home of the mentally retarded children and kindergarten run by the nuns of "Missionaries of Charity"  who render valuable services to the community in caring for aged women and mentally retarded children in which miscellaneous maintenance works carried out including plumbing, electrical, plastering and repairs made to the roof.

The other project was the completion of the second phase at the Greek Orthodox Youth Community Centre which included the provision of door and windows in addition to some repairs.  The trainees from our VTC in Gaza prepared the wood works.

The third project was the rehabilitation of a hall at the YMCA for the benefit of youth.  The project was a joint venture with the Pontifical Mission and Caritas in Jerusalem who kindly co-financed it.

Youth activities:

Again it was not possible to effect any direct activities due mainly to constraints prevailed during the year.

The Committee extended support to 18 local non-governmental organizations and schools in the form of furniture which was produced by our trainees at the vocational training centre in order to facilitate the continuity of their activities mainly for women and children.

A special support in kind in the form of stationery was presented to Illiteracy programme of the Gaza Red Crescent Society in support to their activities in combating illiteracy amongst the youth.

The Pontifical Mission of Palestine has thankfully extended support through NECCCRW to one of the summer camps organized in Rafah for orphaned children.

Activities to be undertaken next year

The activities depend on receiving requests from various communities youth centres, kindergartens and others.  It will depend mainly on the prevailing situation.

::: NECC IDENTITY

The Gaza Area Committee is part of the Department of Service to the Palestine Refugee (DSPR).  The DSPR is a department of the Middle East Council of Churches.  NECCCRW Gaza is an integral part of the Palestine Society and culture and operates with the support of the Churches, ecumenical and secular organizations.

NECCCRW continued to operate the two Family Health Care Centres serving the Shija'ia and Darraj/Tuffah areas in addition to the third one newly opened in Kherbet El Adas in Rafah.  These areas of Gaza and Rafah Cities are amongst the most over-crowded and under-served areas.  Preventive and curative services vary slightly between the three centres.

The mission of the Near East Council of Churches Committee for Refugee Work (NECCCRW) in the Gaza Area is aimed at the empowerment and strengthening of Palestinian individuals and communities to help them secure a better quality of life.  We seek the development of the whole human being by providing education, training and health services that enhance well-being, self-reliance and community participation in decision making and managing their affairs.

The courses have good reputation amongst employers giving the graduates better chances than others to find work due to the emphasis placed on quality and the good care being given to the trainees.
